For many, having the help of a one-to-one tutor can hold open the door, whether that’s to go to the school or university of their choice, or to have the qualifications needed to step towards that dream job. Whether your child requires a little extra support with schoolwork or you want to ensure that they pass their final exams with flying colours, my private tutoring service offers engaging and supportive lessons tailored to the specific requirements of the individual tutee.

Many children need a bit of extra help at some point during their school career. No matter how brilliant the teaching staff, it is not always possible for schools to provide the individual assistance that is sometimes needed. One-to-one tuition can be invaluable, and often plays a vital role in plugging any gaps and stopping the child from falling further behind.

Equally, some children are high-achievers but just need a little extra support and guidance to enable them to obtain the highest grades.

From Key Stage 1 through to university, I see many pupils at my Manchester base who require the support, attention and tailored teaching that one-to-one private tuition provides. I also look to develop revision skills for tutees to continue their home-based learning.

As a private tutor, I take on many students looking to do preparation for exams. By focussing on the areas that the student finds most challenging, I can structure and deliver lessons according to the individual requirements of the tutee.

My private tuition service is very flexible, meaning that in the weeks or months leading up to an exam, you can decide how frequently you would like to have a session, whether it is for the English-related components of the 11+ or a final-year German exam at university.

For pupils who are unable to travel to my home in south Manchester or would prefer to cut out the commute, I offer online private tuition via Skype or Zoom. Please get in touch if this would be your preference.

Many tutees who come to see me at my home in Didsbury, Manchester are adults looking to give languages a second go. Some enjoyed languages at school but didn’t have the opportunity to take them further; others didn’t take to the subject but would like – or need – to give it another go; yet others have learnt one or more languages to a high level and would like to learn another. Whether you are aiming for ‘holiday fluency’ or hoping to attain the highest level of competence, I deliver creative and fun lessons that inject inspiration and positivity into language learning.

As well as offering tuition to school students taking GCSEs and A-levels, I offer more general lessons in languages for those wishing to simply improve their skills without taking exams. So, you might be an adult wishing to fulfil a lifetime’s ambition of learning a foreign language, or a student wanting to add an impressive and much sought-after skill to your CV, or perhaps you are a parent and would like your child to learn a foreign language outside of school. Whatever your requirements, I’m here to help.

I am very experienced in teaching English as a foreign language, having done so here in the UK as well as overseas. With patience and practice-based learning, I am thrilled to have helped many students, both adults and children, master the English language. So, whether you need help with the basics or speak fluently but need assistance with the finer points of English, I can assist you.

Where does tuition take place?

Tuition takes place at my home on Atwood Road in Didsbury. I also offer online tuition via Skype or Zoom.

How long do tuition sessions last?

Tuition sessions normally last an hour. Shorter and longer sessions are available by arrangement.

How much does it cost?

The cost varies depending on the level of tuition as follows:
Primary, including 11+: £36 per session
KS3 and GCSE: £36 per session
A-level: £40 per session
Degree level: £45 per session
Adult learners: £36 per session
Prices are the same for both face-to-face tuition and online tuition.

How many sessions are there in an academic year?

My teaching is organised into half-term blocks which vary in length according to the academic year. The schedule for the academic year 2021-22 is as follows (38 weeks in total): Autumn half-term 1 Mon 6 Sept 2021 – Sun 24 Oct (7 weeks) Autumn half-term 2
Monday/Tuesday students: Mon 1 Nov – Tues 21 Dec (8 weeks)
Wednesday – Sunday students: Mon 1 Nov – Sun 19 Dec (7 weeks)
Spring half-term 1
Monday/Tuesday students: Mon 10 Jan 2022 – Sun 13 Feb (5 weeks)
Wednesday – Sunday students: Wed 5 Jan 2022 – Sun 13 Feb (6 weeks)
Spring half-term 2
Mon 21 Feb – Sun 10 Apr (7 weeks)
Summer half-term 1
Mon 25 Apr – Sun 29 May (5 weeks)
Summer half-term 2
Mon 6 June – Sun 17 July (6 weeks)
If your child’s school holidays do not correspond to this schedule, I am happy to rearrange lessons if required so that lessons are taken in term-time. Extra lessons are also available in the school holidays.

How and when do I pay?

Payments are made half-termly in advance by bank transfer. You will receive an invoice before the start of a half-term for the number of lessons that will be taking place during that half-term. So, for instance, if you are having one lesson a week for GCSE German and there are six weeks in that half-term, you will receive an invoice for 6 x £35 = £210. Payment within 10 days of receipt of the invoice is appreciated.

Can I try a session before committing to a whole block?

New students are welcome to pay just for their first session on a trial basis, without paying in advance for the whole half-term. Then, if you want to proceed, the cost for that session will be deducted from your invoice for that half-term. I’m afraid I don’t offer free trial sessions.

When does tuition take place?

I am available after school, at weekends and in the daytime on weekdays. Students have a regular weekly slot for their tuition in term-time. I also offer lessons in the school holidays on an ad hoc basis.
During exam season, I am able to offer extra sessions as required, subject to availability.

Do you teach in the school holidays?

The regular teaching schedule includes breaks for school holidays, but I do teach in the school holidays by arrangement. These additional lessons are invoiced separately. Please note that I can become extremely busy during the Easter and May half-term holidays, so it is advisable to book in advance if possible.
If you wish to have lessons in the school holidays only, please get in touch and we can work out an individual plan.

What happens if I want to start in the middle of one of your half-term blocks?

If you start lessons with me part-way through a half-term, you will only pay for any weeks remaining in that half-term, and then the next half-term’s lessons will be charged in the normal way.

What happens if I have my final exam before the end of one of your half-term blocks?

If you are finishing part-way through a half-term, e.g. you are taking an exam in the subject I am teaching you, you will only pay up until the date of your exam.

What happens if I can’t make a session?

If you are unable to make a lesson for whatever reason, I will do my utmost to offer an alternative slot. Missed lessons can be made up at any time during the academic year, including school holidays. (Lessons must be made up during the academic year in which they were paid for.) In the vast majority of cases, lessons can be rearranged, and no student should end up paying for lessons that haven’t taken place. However, no refunds will be given for lessons which are missed by the student and which are not made up.

What happens if I am late?

If you are late, the session will end at the normal time and the full fee will still be payable.

What happens if you can’t make a session?

In the rare event that I am unable to make a scheduled session, I will offer an alternative slot. If no mutually convenient alternative slot can be found, you will be reimbursed for the lesson I have been unable to provide. This will take the form of a reduced payment for the next half-term’s sessions, or, if it is your last half-term with me, a refund by bank transfer.

Can I stay with my child during tuition?

I am very happy for you to stay with your child but this is by no means expected. Some parents stay with their child for all or part of the first session but leave them for subsequent sessions. Unfortunately, there is nowhere for parents to wait in the house, so, if you are not sitting in with your child, please collect them punctually at the end of the session.

How much notice do I have to give if I want to stop tuition?

You can cease tuition at the end of any of the half-term blocks. If you don’t wish to renew for the forthcoming half-term, please do let me know as soon as possible so that your slot can be offered to another student.

Which examination boards/specifications do you teach for GCSEs and A-levels?

I have experience of working with a wide variety of examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas, Cambridge) and can teach to any specification. In the case of those subjects with a literature component, I am used to teaching a wide variety of set texts and can teach any set text (or film, where applicable).

For 11+ examinations, what resources do you use?

For 11+ examinations, I tutor using a wide variety of resources, including CEM and GL resources, and I can tailor tuition to suit the particular school(s) you are applying for. I am very flexible, so please discuss your child’s needs with me.

Can I see evidence of your qualifications?

Yes, all certificates (PhD, MA, BA, PGCE) are available to view on request.

Do you have a DBS certificate?

Yes, I have an enhanced DBS certificate, which is available to view on request.

Are you insured?

Yes, I have public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
